TEENS ART WORKSHOP ONLINE - Mindful Surfscape Painting with Katie McKinnon | Thursday 9 April 2020 4-5pm

$30.00

MINDFUL SURFSCAPE PAINTING. An intuitive, abstract workshop recommended for teens aged 12+, facilitated online by Australian artist Katie McKinnon. Workshop duration 50 minutes.

The workshop will encourage children to connect with their creativity. To champion their natural ability and believe they can. To direct their focus to the process and not the outcome. To be present in the simple joy and wonder of painting, establish a sense of pride in achievement, accept the flow and organic nature of painting, the unique skills of ourselves and others and build emotional resilience. To find and develop their own unique style to encourage their ongoing art practice.
And of course, to share this SUPER FUN journey with friends. Professional artist Katie McKinnon will guide workshop participants through a number of abstract painting techniques, tips and tricks, to create a beautiful painting inspired by the Australian natural world.

Attendance to each workshop is strictly limited. Workshop cost of $30 is per child +$10 for one or more additional related children located in the same home sharing a camera/screen. Maximum 3 children per home. Prices include GST. Private family workshops are also available, by appointment. Should you have any questions, please reach out to katie@katiemckinnon.com.au

SURFSCAPE SOUNDTRACK
After you have registered for the workshop, you will receive a special Spotify playlist of music, inspired by the surf beaches of Australia, to enjoy before and after the workshop. This will be sent via email, together with instructions on how to access the workshop and a list of materials.

MATERIALS AND PREPARATION:

Please prepare in advance from this list. Try to make do with materials that are available from your home. Experimenting with new, found materials is fun. It is not important to have every item. One option from each bullet point is necessary. The other items are just suggestions to further your practice.

Australian Art Supplies stores offering delivery services are listed below the materials.

ESSENTIAL MATERIALS (select one option per bullet point)

  • ART PAPER OR CANVAS
2-3 sheets from a Canvas pad OR thick art paper OR draw and wash pad OR smooth YUPO paper OR watercolour paper OR a stretched/unstretched canvas

  • PAINT COLOURS
Any blue and green watercolour or acrylic paint in a tube OR liquid acrylic paint or coloured pigment ink, OR food colouring.
  • WHITE ACRYLIC PAINT. In a tube is best OR flowing liquid acrylic or white pigment ink.
    • CUPS. Disposable or plastic cups OR glass jars, at least 3. Plus one cup of fresh water.
    • SMALL SPRAY BOTTLE
Small spray bottle, recycled perfume atomiser or mister, filled with water. Large spray bottles will also work, please set nozzle to a medium-fine/slow mist.
    • Clean kitchen sponge/scourer
    • Paper towel, wet wipes or wet cloth for cleaning.

NICE TO HAVES, NOT ESSENTIAL
Whatever items you have from this list, found at home (just a few, not all):
paddle pop stick, wooden skewer, glitter - especially silver, gold and blue shades, salt or salt flakes, clean sand, bottle tops, cling wrap, doilies, fabric scraps or cut up pieces of old clothing, coffee filters, egg poaching bags, empty tea bags and their swing tags, textured paper towel, cupcake wrappers, facial tissue, recycled packaging like coffee lids and soft plastic, bubble wrap, painters masking tape, found objects and leaves, sticks and pebbles from the garden.

MINDFUL ART JOURNAL
If you can, find a visual art diary at home. This can be an old exercise book, scrapbook, notebook, sketchbook, pad of art paper, or printer paper stapled or bound together like a book. Be creative and think sustainably. What can be re-purposed or reused? This will be our MINDFUL ART JOURNAL, and we will use this to prompt an ongoing daily art practice, mindfulness and gratitude.

PREPARATION FOR YOU AND YOUR SPACE
Prepare your space with a splash mat or drop cloth covering your table, and the floor if necessary.
It is essential children protect their hands with kitchen rubber gloves, waterproof garden gloves, or vinyl, latex or nitrile gloves if available (best). Food colour in particular is highly pigmented and will temporarily stain skin.
Wear old clothes that can get a little painty, a big shirt or an apron. Tie long hair back. Please bring an open mind and a growth mindset. Our workshops will focus on the process of intuitive painting over outcomes, trying new things, being gentle with ourselves and others, practicing upcycling and sustainability, being present, really enjoying our creativity and having fun.
