  • KIDS ART CLUB online with Katie McKinnon | Term Three 2020 Saturdays 9-10am
    Quick shop

A series of weekly online art workshops in Term Three 2020, recommended for children 8-11 years, facilitated online by Australian artist Katie McKinnon. The duration of each workshop is 50 minutes.

    Start date - 8 August 2020

    Workshops 8 August, 15 August, 22 August, 29 August, 5 September, 12 September

Final workshop for Term Three - 12 September 2020.

Start at any point in the term, fees are adjusted after each class so you will only pay for the workshops your child attends.

Professional artist Katie McKinnon will lead a series of seven fun and inclusive workshops throughout Term Three. Exploring experimental abstract painting techniques, tips and tricks, to create beautiful, intuitive original work.

    Art Club members will:

    • Develop their skills painting and sketching on art paper, linen and canvas.
    • Discover the empowering, mood-enhancing magic of a regular personal art practice, keeping a mindful art journal and sketchtaking.
    • Explore and appreciate the beauty and wonder of the Australian natural world.
    • Examine the lives and styles of pioneering, contemporary, abstract artists.
    • Enjoy Katie's friendly, encouraging, inclusive style of support and mentoring - and have a lot of fun!

The workshop will encourage the children to connect with their creativity. To champion their natural ability and believe they can. To direct their focus to the process and not the outcome. To be present in the simple joy and wonder of painting, establish a sense of pride in achievement, accept the flow and organic nature of painting, the unique skills of ourselves and others and build emotional resilience. To find and develop their own unique style to encourage their ongoing art practice.

Attendance to each workshop is strictly limited. Term cost for a series of seven 50 minute workshops is $165. Price includes GST.

Estimated cost of materials is $50-60, although most households will already have many of the necessary materials. Materials to be sourced/assembled directly by teens and their parents or carers. Katie will provide a beautiful piece of raw Italian linen to all children by post, for our linen painting class. A full materials list will be sent to all attendees upon registration. Should you have any questions, please reach out to katie@katiemckinnon.com.au

    ART CLUB SOUNDTRACK
After participants have registered for the workshops, they will receive access to a special Spotify playlist of music, to enjoy before and after the workshops and to support their mindful art practice. This will be sent via email, together with instructions on how to access the workshop and a complete list of materials

    GUIDE TO MATERIALS AND PREPARATION:

Please prepare in advance from this list. Try to make do with materials that are available from your home. Experimenting with new, found materials is fun. It is not important to have every item. NICE TO HAVES, NOT ESSENTIAL

paddle pop stick, wooden skewer, glitter - especially silver, gold and blue shades, salt or salt flakes, clean sand, bottle tops, cling wrap, doilies, fabric scraps or cut up pieces of old clothing, coffee filters, egg poaching bags, empty tea bags and their swing tags, textured paper towel, cupcake wrappers, facial tissue, recycled packaging like coffee lids and soft plastic, bubble wrap, painters masking tape, found objects and leaves, sticks and pebbles from the garden.

    MINDFUL ART JOURNAL
If you can, find a visual art diary at home. This can be an old exercise book, scrapbook, notebook, sketchbook, pad of art paper, or printer paper stapled or bound together like a book. Be creative and think sustainably. What can be re-purposed or reused? This will be our MINDFUL ART JOURNAL, and we will use this to prompt an ongoing daily art practice, mindfulness and gratitude.

PREPARATION FOR YOU AND YOUR SPACE
Prepare your space with a splash mat or drop cloth covering your table, and the floor if necessary.
It is essential participants protect their hands with kitchen rubber gloves, waterproof garden gloves, or vinyl, latex or nitrile gloves if available (best). Food colour in particular is highly pigmented and will temporarily stain skin.
Wear old clothes that can get a little painty, a big shirt or an apron. Tie long hair back. Please bring an open mind and a growth mindset. Our workshops will focus on the process of intuitive painting over outcomes, trying new things, being gentle with ourselves and others, practicing upcycling and sustainability, being present, really enjoying our creativity and having fun.
